Ruth Schlom
August 12, 1919 – June 28, 2022
Ruth Schlom, 103, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a true friend to many entered eternity on eternity on June 28, 2022. She passed at Kaiser “Cadillac” Hospital in Los Angeles, California, due to medical complications.
Ruth was born in Buffalo, New York to Phillip and Rebecca Cohen. They left Buffalo when Ruth was 3 years old, with her three sister’s Dorothy, Gertrude, and Esther. Ruth was the youngest of four daughters. She was closest to her sister Esther and was beautiful, gracious, and always fun to be around. Although she was the youngest of four she outlived her sister’s and now are all together once again.
Ruth met her loving husband Gene Schlom, who happened to be good friends with one of her first cousins. He was brought along one day to meet Ruth and they never looked back ever since. They were 16 and 17 years of age at the time and dated for four years until they fell in love and were married on June 16, 1940. The two became best friends of course and started their journey together and were married almost 72 years. They finally landed in a great neighborhood called Beverlywood in LA. Her husband Gene passed away on March 26, 2012. The two of them birthed two wonderful children during their time together: Dennis and Carol Schlom. Dennis died in 2009 and Carol has been a godsend, helping Ruth through the last years of her life.
Ruth was an avid volunteer throughout her life for such places as: City of Hope, President Council of Jewish Women, as well as PTA President and Brownie/Girl Scout Leader.
Some of Ruth’s favorite activities included traveling with her husband (mainly on cruise ships throughout the world, such places as Panama, Hawaii, and Costa Rica), loved writing, drives to the desert, singing with her friends in her choir group, as they traveled around town performing for many to hear. Her favorite activity was having family come over, celebrating different holidays with her children and all her grandchildren.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Carol Schlom. She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Philip Schlom, David Schlom, Steven Schlom, and Laura Rosecrans as well as great grandchildren: Ryan, Emilee, Allie, Joseph, Michael, Matthew, Kimberly, Julia, Bradley, Jillian, Josie Schlom and one great-great grandchild, Roman Feger.
A funeral will be held on Friday July 1, 2022 at 2pm at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary,
6001 W. Centinela Ave., Los Angeles, Ca. 90045
