April 21, 1929 – August 14, 2016
It is with deep sorrow that our family suddenly lost beloved Bernard Cohen, age 87, on Sunday August 14, 2016 at 11:47 p.m. at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California. After truly heroic and stalwart rescue efforts by paramedics and firefighters from L.A. County Fire Station #8 and Hatzolah of Los Angeles, Bernie succumbed to an apparent cardiac arrest. Bernie was surrounded by loved ones when he passed. Bernie was a devoted husband to his wife of 68 years, Ruth Rebecca Cohen, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life. Bernie and Ruthie moved to California in 1985 from Brooklyn, New York and Pompano Beach, Florida. For 30 years, he was a New York truck driver for Dilberts and Waldbaums and later a supermarket produce manager for Pantry Pride in Florida and at Quinn’s Grocery in West Hollywood. Bernie was also a loyal and loving father and father-in-law to Marc Cohen & Lyn MacEwen Cohen, Mitchell Cohen & AnnaMarie Cohen, Alan Cohen & Charlene Cohen, and Brett & Kelly Cohen. He is survived by seven grandchildren: Heather Trilling, Jessica Cohen, Amanda Cohen, Antonio Cohen, Eric Knesz, Brandon Cohen and Cody Cohen. His great-granddaughters are Catherine, Mia, Caroline and Peyton Trilling. All his life, Bernie cared most about family, his unwavering priority, and truly loved his beautiful dog, Rusty. Everyone remembers that Bernie was “such a beaming guy, always happy, always had a smile.” Donations in his honor may be made to Jewish Family Services of Los Angeles or Hatzolah of Los Angeles. Services will be held at the Hillside Memorial Park at 6001 W. Centinela Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90045 on Thursday, September 18 at 2:00 PM.
