Terry D. Avchen, a kind and generous soul passed away on March 13, 2022 at the age of 70. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, the love of his life of 41 years, Denise and his cherished son Brian. Born Sept 9, 1951, Terry will be deeply missed by the multitude of people whose lives he touched. Everyone who had the privilege to know him is left with a deep void and somber heart upon his passing.
A long-time resident of Beverly Hills, he attended El Rodeo Elementary School and Beverly Hills High School. He received his BA at UCLA, and was a 1978 graduate of UCLA Law School, a member of Law Review, Moot Court and Phi Beta Kappa.
Terry, a founding partner of the law firm Glaser, Weil, Fink, Howard, Avchen and Shapiro, is credited for building the Firm’s Environmental and Energy Department, recognized as “Tier 1” in the categories of Energy Law, Environmental Law and Natural Resources Law. For over four decades, Terry represented companies across the environmental and alternative energy spectrum.
As authentic as they come, Terry will be remembered for his brilliant mind, indominable charm, unrelenting loyalty and endless kindness. Family was always his priority, and nothing made him happier than being in the presence of his wife and son. They were known for the countless parties they hosted in their backyard. Terry loved hiking in nature and traveling.
Devoted to protecting and cleaning up the environment, he was awarded an “AV Preeminent” rating. Since 2004, he was recognized among the Southern California Super Lawyers. Terry was honored in 2013 as a “Top Rated Lawyer” in Energy, Environmental and Natural Resources and continued working up until days before his death.
Honored throughout his life for his passion for helping others, Terry and his wife Denise received founder’s awards for both P.A.T.H. (“People Assisting the Homeless”) in 1998 and New Roads School in 2011.
In 2009, Terry and Denise also co-founded Environmental Research Advocates, a global non-profit platform to fund research and education in cutting edge sustainable science. The non-profit foundation has received wide acceptance at the United Nations, as well as at the Department of Energy.
We are reminded of the legacy Terry built every day; both professionally and personally. A profoundly humble and proud man, Terry was known for his dry wit, discernment, integrity and genuineness. He will be remembered for his deep friendships and the overwhelming kindness he offered to all.
Terry is survived by his loving wife Denise Avchen, his beloved son, Brian Avchen, his adoring mother, Sandy Avchen and his sisters Kathie Davis and Patty Avchen. Pre-deceased by his father “Tex” Avchen and his brother Michael Avchen, Terry will be deeply missed as a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend.
