Sharlene Ann Galper, adored wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed peacefully at home at the age of 93.
Sharlene was born to Nathan and Agusta Zipperman in Minneapolis. She moved with her family to Los Angeles as a young child and continued to thrive here, graduating from Fairfax High and making lifelong friends along the way.
In 1955, Sharlene married Sol Galper, and together they raised three children in Brentwood. Their shared commitment to family and one another led to a life filled with love, joy, generosity, and success. In the early 1980s, they built their dream home, which served as a welcoming and frequent gathering place for family and friends. An exceptional hostess, Sharlene was known for her thoughtfully planned celebrations and her ever-ready hospitality.
Sharlene had many friends who loved her dearly, a devotion she warmly returned. She would gather them to go antiquing and embark on journeys both near and far — including road trips with the “Van-Go’s,” a group made up of her, Sol, and three other couples who would simply “get in the van and go!”
Sharlene carried on her father's legacy by being actively involved in the Jewish community throughout her adult life, including becoming president of the Sisterhood at University Synagogue. She was a true hero in her work supporting AIDS patients and other causes in Los Angeles for many years through her synagogue association.
Sharlene was a collector of antiques, jewelry, and other unique and beautiful objects. Her keen aesthetic sense led to a partnership in the antique consignment store Something Old, Something Nouveau in Santa Monica.
Throughout her life, Sharlene was deeply devoted to her husband, children, and grandchildren. She cherished time with family and delighted in making birthdays, holidays and anniversaries feel special. She also enjoyed planning family vacations, including the decades-long annual trip to Laguna Beach Pageant of the Masters.
Sharlene will be remembered for her grace, smile, playful sense of humor, and loving heart. She is survived by her three children, Norman, Steven (Rachel), and Susan (Paul); and her seven grandchildren, Briana, Ari, Adam, Marlee, Nathan, Brian, and Nicole (Karsten). Sharlene was laid to rest at Hillside Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to Hadassah.
