After spending her last day surrounded by family, in the early morning on March 6, 2017, Ruchla Ferdman (nee Szechatow) passed away peacefully in the house she made a home for 57 years. She was 92 years old. Ruchla was one of the last of her generation of her family. Together with her immediate family, she survived the ravages of World War II by escaping to Uzbekistan when she was sixteen. After the war, Ruchla married Nuson Ferdman (z”l) in Warsaw, Poland. Eventually they made their way to Los Angeles, after time spent in Sweden and Detroit. They were devotedly married for almost 53 years.
In addition to running Ferdman Engraving with her husband for over three decades, Ruchla was a dedicated volunteer with ORT, The Workmen’s Circle and a lifelong Bundist. Until the end, she was an avid reader in at least three languages and enjoyed attending a weekly book group, which at one time she hosted in her home. Later in life, she also took up writing, composing her life’s stories with the deft of a native speaker.
Ruchla is survived by her three children and their spouses: Sara and Irwin Tauben, Benny Ferdman and Shari Davis, and Ida and Kelly Ferdman; as well as her beloved five grandchildren: Evelyn, Michael, Joshua, Jacob and Shoshana as well as Evelyn’s husband , Jordy Koffman.
The funeral will take place Wednesday, March 8th at 11am at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery, 6001 W. Centinela Avenue, Culver City.
