With heavy hearts, we inform you that TIOH member Rita Feder passed away after sunset on October 31, 2025 at the age of 97, and was laid to rest privately at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery on November 04, 2025. She is survived by her daughter and TIOH member Ilene Feder, son Mark Feder, niece Denise Coleman (Larry), and nephews Larry Atterman and Andy Feder (Stacey) and niece - Tirtza Hargil and niece - Hava Feary (Dave) Rita was born in Berlin, Germany in 1928. She and her family escaped Nazi Germany in 1939. They were on the last ship out of Genoa, Italy, sailing to Shanghai, China. She lived there for nine years. She attended the English Kadoori School. Rita was an avid runner and was on the school's track team, running the 100 meters in 10 seconds. In 1948, Rita left Shanghai with her older brother, Bill. She wanted to be American! Her parents went to what was then Palestine, to be with Rita's middle brother, Jona, who had left Berlin earlier. Rita and Bill came to Los Angeles, where they had a few cousins. In 1950, she met Robert (Bob) Feder on a blind date. Six months later, they were married. Bob was 13 years older and was born and raised in Hollywood, CA. Bob’s family had been members of Temple Israel for years. Bob was in TIOH's first confirmation class. The small world story is that Rabbi Nussbaum, who was the rabbi at that time, turned out to be the same rabbi who bar mitzvah'd Rita’s brother Bill, in Berlin! Beshert. Rita and Bob were married for 55 years before Bob’s passing at 90, in 2005. They had two children. Mark was born in 1952 and Ilene in 1955. Rita was a wonderful mother and housewife. She loved to cook, knit, needlepoint, and do the L.A. Times crossword puzzles. Once Mark and Ilene were older, Rita started working part-time downtown, at the L.A. fashion mart. She loved fashion, shopping, and was always dressed to the nines. She had found her calling. Rita was very active in many charitable organizations. She also was President of TIOH Sisterhood and very active in all things Temple Israel, including her weekly Pan card game. She was one tough cookie. She lived life to the fullest, until the end. She wouldn’t think twice about jumping on a plane to see her daughter, in NYC and end up in Paris or wherever. She loved to travel. Rita was the sweetest and would befriend anyone who gave her a chance. She will be missed terribly; Rita brought a shine of light to all who knew her. Rest in peace.
