Mel Bayer died after a four-month battle with complications from colon cancer. He was a distinguished businessman, supporter of multiple charities, and a loving father and grandfather to his family.
Born in Los Angeles, he was in the ROTC at UCLA and became a Major in the U.S. Air Force. Stationed primarily in Utah, he met and married Beatrice Pepper (of loving memory).
His primary business activity was running Atlas Springs, manufacturer of bedsprings and other components for the furniture industry. Mel also was a steward for the union-sponsored employee retirement fund and was active in YPO. His hobbies included boating (especially to Catalina Island) and travel.
Mel had three children, David (Fran) who resides in Minnesota, Brian (of loving memory), and Lindsey who resides in Florida. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Mitchell, Jeremy and Eileen Bayer (children of David and Fran) and Rowan and Brianna Bayer (children of Lindsey).
Mel’s fun wit and good nature will be missed by family and friends, including devoted companion, Lenne Sussman, and sisters Trena (Stan Greitzer) and Lorraine Sinskey.
In lieu of flowers we suggest donations to the Jewish Federation, Cedars Sinai Hospital, the American Heart Association, Colon Cancer Alliance, or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
The funeral service will be held at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 27.
