Our family is saddened to share that on Sunday, March 13, 2022, Mark David Spero, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 68.
Mark was born on May 4, 1958 in Astoria, Queens, NY to Robert & Pearl, the second of 3 sons. He looked out for and always supported his older brother, Nathan, and younger brother, Gary. Mark & his family moved to Torrance, CA when he was a toddler, though there was always a part of him that would remain a proud New Yorker. At West High School, Mark discovered his love of math and also fostered his love of being part of community, managing the baseball team, playing in the band and working his first jobs.
Mark studied at Cal State Dominguez Hills, and received his Masters Degrees at Cal State Long Beach, where he met his beloved Cindy while she was in undergrad. As a math teacher and a numbers guy, Mark expressed his love through numbers and dates, and was looking forward to celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this August. Mark was a hands-on father to Ariana, and would proudly boast to all of her life and accomplishments.
Mark loved his life as an educator, and taught mathematics for about 40 years at all levels, often in places where communities were forgotten or overlooked, populations without the access to get the support that they needed. Mark had minored in Spanish and taught many students for whom English was not their first language. He transferred those skills during his time working to help adults pass their citizenship exams. Community and connection were deeply important to Mark, whether it was being part of the Jewish community, Brotherhood, running clubs, or his decades-long friendships. Mark went above and beyond for people to help them succeed, and made a lasting impact on many.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Robert, mother, Pearl, and brother, Gary. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, his daughter, Ariana, son-in-law, Patrick and his brother Nathan.
