Leonard Irwin Ginsburg of Sacramento, California, born on October 24, 1943, passed away on May 21, 2026, at the age of 82. He was born in DuBois, Pennsylvania, to Morris and Ida Ginsburg.
After moving to Los Angeles with his family in 1951, Leonard went on to graduate from Hamilton High School and San Francisco State University where he found the place that would become one of the great loves of his life: San Francisco. Leonard spent most of his adult years there, later making nearby Larkspur his home as well.
Few people knew San Francisco the way Leonard did. He loved introducing visitors to its neighborhoods, history, architecture, restaurants, and hidden corners, and there was no better guide to the city he adored and proudly called home for decades.
In retirement, Leonard moved to Sacramento, where he embraced life fully and happily, enjoying every moment of his later years.
Leonard’s curiosity and love of learning shaped every aspect of his life. Well-read and intellectually engaged, he immersed himself in history, art, science, politics. and literature. As well as film and cinema history, developing a deep understanding of storytelling and the evolution of the medium. Friends and family admired Leonard’s sharp mind, breadth of knowledge, and gift for sharing ideas and insights.
Leonard was predeceased by his parents, Morris and Ida Ginsburg, by his sister, Rosalind Glasser, and his brothers-in-law William Bud Schur and Harvey A. Glaser.
He is survived by his sister, Marlene Glaser of Los Angeles; his brother-in-law, Yakov Glasser of Jerusalem, Israel; his cousins, Harold and Cindy Lebenson of Pennsylvania and Karen Broudy of Los Angeles; and many beloved family members, including his nephews and niece, Marc Schur, Paul Schur, Elitzur Glasser, Pnina Nulman, and Malkiel Glasser.
Leonard treasured the lifelong friendships that enriched his life, including those he shared with Kevin Pursglove, Binnie Perper, Themeos Drossos, Marilyn Wortzman, Lynn Murison, Donald Pursglove, Anne Kathleen Pursglove, John Dwyer, George Scarpato and De Doring, among others. Their loyalty, companionship, and enduring friendship brought him immeasurable joy throughout the years. To Leonard, these cherished friends were family. His family embraced these bonds, holding his dear friends in great affection and gratitude for the love, laughter, support, and countless memories they shared over a lifetime.
A private service will be held at Hillside Memorial Park in Los Angeles.
