Joel Sidney Shafran, a beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2024, at the age of 83. Born in New York City on November 9, 1941 to Hilda and Israel Shafran, Joel lived a life marked by dedication and love for his family.

Joel is survived by his two sons, Philip and Jonathan (wife April). He was also a devoted grandfather to his beloved granddaughter, Rosalie, who brought immense happiness to his later years. Joel was preceded in death by his sister Judy and his beloved wife, Gail, with whom he shared 32 wonderful years of marriage.

Throughout his life, Joel was known for his commitment to his family and his gifts in mathematics and education. His early life was marked by a passion for learning. He pursued his academic interests with vigor, earning a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University at an early age. His work in aerospace engineering was impactful, beginning at Hughes Aircraft and continuing at Raytheon until his retirement. Joel spent his post-retirement years volunteering and tutoring high school and college students in math.

Joel’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of his family and friends, but his memory will live on through the stories and love he shared with those around him.

A private family service will be held to honor Joel’s life and legacy at Hillside Memorial Park, 10:00am on December 9th, 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice in Joel’s memory.
