Howard L Mandelstam

Howard Lee Mandelstam, age 90, died peacefully on September 8, 2022.

Howard was born on March 27, 1932, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Louis and Rose Mandelstam. He spent his childhood in both Iowa and Nebraska before moving with his parents and younger brother to Los Angeles in 1945. He attended Belmont High School, then went on to attend USC, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.  Howard went on to enjoy a long and successful career at TRW (now Northrop Grumman), with increasing responsibility over the years.

Howard was a lifelong learner who ultimately took early retirement to pursue a certificate in financial planning, as well as a liberal arts education at UCLA. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Getty Center and the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Howard is survived by his wife, Darlene, their son Gary, their daughter Jill, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by many other family members and lifelong friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Louis and Rose, and his brother, Bill.

Funeral services will take place at Hillside Memorial Park on Tuesday, September 13 at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Howard’s memory to The Nature Conservancy.
