HAIN, Herbert W. (Herb) June 28, 1921 to April 4, 2017
Herbert Walter (Herb) Hain was born June 28, 1921, in Dieberg, Germany, the son of Max Hain and Freda Heil. He immigrated to New York in 1936, served in the U.S. Army in WWII, and was an unwitting observer of the post WWII Jewish migration from Germany to Palestine.
At a bridge game at USC in late 1952, he met the love of his life, his future wife Eva. They were married in May 1953, spent almost 64 years together, and raised five children in Los Angeles.Herb lived an amazing life, made many lifelong friends, and always left a lasting impression with his humor, interesting stories, and inquisitive mind. He started the long-running ‘You Can Help’ column at the L.A. Times, and also was the L.A. Times’ Bridge Editor for many years. In later years Herb and Eva travelled widely, and Herb became a biblical scholar and presented at conferences around the world.Herb is survived by his wife Eva, sons Jeffrey (Randy), L. Craig, Michael (Amber), Phillip (Susan), and daughter Stephanie Fabian (Nathan), 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 9, at 1:00 pm at Hillside Memorial Park, 6001 W. Centinela Ave., Los Angeles.
