Etta was born on December 26, 1924 in Sheho, a small town in Saskatchewan, Canada, where her parents owned the General Store. She excelled at everything and obtained her piano teaching credential from the Toronto Conservatory of Music while still a senior in High School. She was also the only one in her senior class to pass all of the Saskatchewan standardized final exams the first time!
She married Lawrence Lackman in 1947 and moved to Long Beach, where their daughters, Rachelle, Louise, and Cheryl were born. She eventually worked in her husband’s law office, and when her youngest daughter went to UCLA, Etta followed her passion and attended night law school, obtaining her Juris Doctor Degree, not to practice law, but merely for the knowledge.
Etta, Larry, and her in-laws (Sam and Bee Lackman) were founding members of Temple Beth Shalom in Long Beach, and, for many years, she sang in the Temple choir with one sister, while the other sister played piano for the rehearsals. The Temple Beth Shalom members became part of, and remained, her extended family.
She loved traveling internationally with Larry, and also looked forward to their twice a year visits to Hawaii. She enjoyed golfing with him on the weekends, too. Her greatest joy, however, came from her family. More recently, she loved watching her great-grandchildren swim and play in her pool. She was an incredible, loving, positive person, with a great sense of humor, who never said a negative thing about anyone, and only saw the good in people and in life. She was grateful for everything and everyone in her life, and was loved beyond words by her family. She will truly be missed!
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Lackman, her sisters (Merle Gould and Sylvia Landa), her brother (Jack Kates), her nephew, (Craig Landa), her daughter (Louise Marak), and her grandson (Ben Marak).
She is survived by daughters Rachelle Lackman (Brian Ellinoy) and Cheryl Lackman Feinberg (Ron Solomon); grandchildren Tommy Marak, Batya Ellinoy, Ari Ellinoy (Jessica), Craig Feinberg (Barbara), Adriana Feinberg (Anthony Herrera), Jessica Solomon Vigil (Matt) and Joe Solomon (Kayla); nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law (Marilyn Kates), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Through her unwavering unconditional love, support, positive attitude, and wonderful sense of humor, she will live on through her family and loved ones.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 26th at 12:00 pm at Hillside Memorial Park, 6001 W Centinela Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90045.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Beth Shalom, 3635 Elm Ave., Long Beach, CA 90807.
