Edwin Maltz

March 12, 1931 — July 26, 2025

Edwin Maltz was born 1931 in St. Louis, MO, to Mollie and Louis Maltz. He is survived by his three children, David Maltz, Alisa Wood and Susan Tesch, along with his grandchildren Dillan Alvarez, Spencer Wood, Mariah Wood, Allison Tesch, Julia Tesch, and his great-grandchildren, Aileen Alvarez, Aria Alvarez and Josie Tesch Picard. He was preceded in death by his parents, older siblings, and his wife of 44 years, Joyce Maltz. Edwin passed away in the loving care of his daughter and son-in-law Alisa and Ron Wood who looked after him as his health began declining over many years.

Ed was an accomplished and passionate musician and joined the 503rd Air Force Band as trumpeter. After discharge, Ed passed an audition and toured the U.S. with the Henry Busse Orchestra and spent a year on the road. Finding the lifestyle of a traveling musician too turbulent, he changed course, enrolling in college and studying architecture, which became another of his great artistic passions. He became Vice President of two architectural firms and his work included monuments, buildings and a design award from the American Institute of Architects. After retirement Ed immersed himself in another of his artistic passions, painting and drawing, infusing his work with an architect’s eye and developing a very skilled and sensitive style of portraiture as well. He exhibited at numerous galleries and had a solo show at the Buenaventura Gallery.

Ed was born in the depths of the Great Depression and his family lost everything. Just after the family had recovered financially, his father died of a heart attack when Ed was 13. Perhaps it was these hardships that gave Ed his grit and drive that he carried with him through his life.

Ed was married to Joyce Maltz for 44 years before cancer ended her life. They traveled and otherwise enjoyed their retirement as much as possible before her untimely death.

Ed was devoted to fitness and kept himself in great shape into his early 90s when his health curtailed his physical abilities. But even then, he could be counted on to use his walker as a runner!

Ed will be remembered by his family as a colorful character, a family man and an artist with a love of story-telling and a deep affection for children and animals. Over the years he routinely gave to a number of charities.
