Kever Avot v’Imahot

events kever avot Events Kever Avot vImahot Service

October 2, 2011

Kever Avot v’Imahot is a Hebrew phrase that literally means “the graves of our patriarchs and matriarchs.” The original purpose was to pray at those graves, asking our ancestors to intercede with God on our behalf this Yom Kippur. While that purpose may no longer have meaning for many contemporary Jews, the act of visiting the graves is an important one. It is important for us to actively remember those we loved who now are gone. The High Holy Days are a time of memory and reflection. As we look to the future, we should acknowledge the past and our debt to it, especially our debt to those special people who helped mold our lives; who helped to make us who we are. We must always remember that we are but one link in our chain. We are linked to those who came before us as well as to those who will come after us, and we are responsible for connecting the past to the future.

Today the Kever Avot v’Imahot memorial service is traditionally held on the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
