An onen is an immediate relative (parent, sibling, spouse or child) who is in mourning. Traditionally, these people are excused from the daily requirements of Judaism such as attending daily prayer services or reciting daily blessings. Because an onen is involved with arranging funeral and service needs, condolence calls are customarily not made until the funeral is over. Close friends may, however, offer to help with the arrangements and notify other friends and family of the funeral details.
